Ovarian torsion refers to a condition that has turned the ovary of a woman to a degree that may occlude the arteria venosa or ovary. The condition is commonly found in women more young people who are in reproductive age.
More simply put, torsion of ovary occurs when an ovary cysts twist to a certain extent. Women suffer from experience of torsion of ovary sudden onset of pain in the lower abdomen, as well as nausea and vomiting. Pain may also radiate to the lower back, thighs and side. Constipation, diarrhea and mild fever, tachycardia may also occur along with the pain.
There are a number of conditions that can result in ovarian torsion. These vary from abnormal changes in the normal ovaries or any disease that damages the ovary or tube. When there are changes or spasms in the blood vessels of normal ovaries, of ovarian torsion can occur. Cyst of ovary, trauma in any of the tubes or ovaries can result in torsion of ovary. It may sometimes also be elected in the size and shape of the ovary in rotation.
The diagnosis of ovarian torsion is difficult. Most often an operation is carried out even before the diagnosis was confirmed. It has been suggested that Doppler ultrasound should be used to diagnose the torsion of ovary. Lack of blood flow of the ovaries in the Sonographer Doppler is a good predictor of disease.
The treatment for ovarian torsion includes laparoscopy used to rest the twisted ovarian. Oophoropexy may also be done to correct the ovary which may torse again. Blood flow is sometimes cut to the ovary in severe cases over a long period of time. Necrosis of the ovary can occur and can have the ovary removed surgically.
Ovarian torsion usually occurs in only one ovary. They can occur in the extended or normal ovaries and fallopian tubes.
